Aluminum and its alloys are today considered one of the most practical of metals for a variety of reasons. Its low cost, light-weight, and modern appearance are among the primary reasons for its widespread use. It is non-sparking, electrically conductive, thermally conductive, non-magnetic, reflective, and chemically resistant. It is popular in the construction, marine and aircraft industries because of its ease of fabrication, non-toxicity, strength (pound-for pound), and resistance to the corrosive atmospheres of industry and marine environments. Anodizing increases this corrosion resistance and also permits iridescent finishes in different colors. Some alloys are slightly corrosive and so are cladded with a thin layer of aluminum for added protection
5052 grade introduction
Uses:Typical applications include marine, aircraft, architecture, general sheet metal work, heat exchangers, fuel lines and tanks, flooring panels, streetlights, appliances, rivets and wire.
The exceptional corrosion resistance of 5052 alloy against seawater and salt spray makes it a primary candidate for the failure-sensitive large marine structures, like tanks of liquefied natural gas tankers.
5083 grade introduction
5083 aluminium alloy is an aluminium alloy with magnesium and traces of manganese and chromium. It is highly resistant to attack by seawater and industrial chemicals.
Alloy 5083 retains exceptional strength after welding. It has the highest strength of the non-heat treatable alloys, but is not recommended for use in temperatures in excess of 65°C.
Anodizing
For AA 5083 alloy, the stages of porous structure development are substantially identical with that of pure aluminum, although an increase in oxide growth rate and high conductance of the oxide film were observed.
Applications:Alloy 5083 is commonly used in: Shipbuilding / Railroad cars / Drilling rigs / Coachwork / Pressure vessels.
Uses requiring a weldable moderate-strength alloy having good corrosion resistance are commonly utilizing alloy 5083.
5086 aluminum is an aluminium alloy, primarily alloyed with magnesium. It is not strengthened by heat treatment, instead becoming stronger due to strain hardening, or cold mechanical working of the material.
Since heat treatment doesn't strongly affect the strength, 5086 can be readily welded and retain most of its mechanical strength. The good results with welding and good corrosion properties in seawater make 5086 extremely popular for vessel gangways, building boat and yacht hulls.
Mechanical properties:
The mechanical properties of 5086 vary significantly with hardening and temperature.
5086 is the preferred hull material for small aluminium boats or larger yachts. Its high strength and good corrosion resistance make it an excellent match for yachting.
5086 has a tendency to undergo Stress corrosion cracking and is not used much in aircraft construction as a result.
Welding
5086 is often assembled using arc welding, typically MIG or TIG welding. The newer technique of Friction stir welding has also been successfully applied but is not in common use.
6061
Combines most of the good qualities of aluminum. It possesses high strength, high resistance to corrosion, good workability, and a wide range of mechanical properties. It is the least expensive and most versatile of the heat treatable alloys. 6061 in the annealed condition offers excellent weldability and formability, and is readily disposed to furnace brazing. It can be clad to offer higher corrosion resistance. 6061-T6 plate is ASME Unfired Pressure Vessel Code approved.
Applications
Marine equipment, boats, truck and bus bodies, tankage and-tank fittings, structural components, screw machine parts, high pressure applications, mine skips, transmission towers, moldings, pipes, and etc.
